The Ogre

Ogres are large human like creatures, they are cruel and ugly monsters which are generally depicted in fairy tales as the evil creature's who eat human's and bold children. Ogre's are often drawn as big creatures with human features, they have a large head, lot's of hair and have a very well built body.

They are normally found in children's stories having kidnapped a beautiful princess and subsequently a valiant knight is required to go slay the beast and rescue the princess. They also appear in some children's cartoons causing trouble such as in the Gummi Bears where an army of ogres led by Duke Ighorn attempt to conquer Dunwyn Castle.

However there is one ogre whom everyone loves despite his appearance and his efforts to scare them away from his swam. The main character in the Shrek trilogy of films is an ogre, he is slightly different from the normal ogre description as he is green but he does fit other characteristics as he is very strong which he demonstrates when he defeats all the knight in a wrestling match. All notions of a horrible ogre are gone by the end of the film at which point you are hoping he gets his princess instead of the prince and that Shrek the ogre live happily ever after.

The ogre originates in France in the twelfth centaury where it appears in the following verse:

Et s'est que il ert encore,

Que toz li reamus de Logres,

Qui ja dis fu la terre as ogres,

Ert destruite par cele lance.

This verse translates to:

And it is written that there will come a time,

When all the kingdom of Logres,

Which formerly was the land of ogres,

Will be destroyed by the spear.

This reference to Logres which is England may be talking about the mythical giants which are said to have ruled England before the humans.

An old English word orcneas is found in Beowulf lines 112 – 113, this is what inspired J.R.R Tolkien to create his orc which appears in the lord of the rings.
